#FolkArtChallenge — Our Free Monthly Art Challenge

The #FolkArtChallenge is our free monthly art challenge, open to absolutely everyone. Each month we announce a theme rooted in folk art traditions, and you create — at your own pace, in your own style, at your own level. Post your work with the hashtag #FolkArtChallenge and tag @artparatodos, and you could be featured on our blog and social channels. Folk Art Club members get something extra: personal feedback on their challenge piece. But the challenge itself costs nothing, requires nothing, and welcomes anyone with something to make.

August 2026 Edition — Theme: "Tree of Life"

Few symbols appear in more folk traditions than the Tree of Life — roots, trunk, branches, birds, fruit, and everything a family or a village wanted to say about growth and belonging. This August, we're making our own.

Weekly prompts

  • Week 1 — Sketch yours. No pressure, no polish. Draw the shape of your Tree of Life: roots, trunk, branches. Loose pencil is perfect.
  • Week 2 — Add folk patterns. Fill your tree with pattern: dots, borders, repeated leaves, birds, flowers. Make the motifs your own.
  • Week 3 — Limited palette. Render a version using only terracotta, indigo, and cream. Three colors, endless character.
  • Week 4 — Final piece + story. Finish your Tree of Life and post it with a few sentences about what it means to you. The story is part of the art.

Rules

  1. Original work only. Made by you, for this challenge.
  2. All levels welcome. First drawing ever or ten-thousandth — same challenge, same community.
  3. One post per week, max. Quality over quantity; give every piece its moment.
  4. Respect cultural traditions. Folk art belongs to real communities. Be inspired by traditions — study them, credit them, reinterpret them — but don't copy sacred or specific cultural works and present them as your own.
